A native of Ankara, Turkey, Can Erel joined the Turkish Air Force after graduating from the Aeronautical Engineering Department of Istanbul Technical University. During its 18-year military career, Mr. Erel held a leading role in engineering and management including responsibility as the Senior National Representative for the Republic of Turkey in the F-16 System Program Office of USAF in Dayton-OH between 2000 and 2002.
After retiring, Mr. Erel held various executive and advisory positions for multiple companies in the aerospace and aviation industries and authored several books.
At the end of 2017, Mr. Erel accepted an invitation to join the DGCA. He acts as Deputy Director General and is in charge of Airworthiness, Aerodromes, Aviation Security, ECAC and EASA. He is also the President of the newly formed Gender Balance Fostering Commission (GBFC) and the Quality Representative for the organization.
Mr. Erel is the recipient of multiple awards for its gender balance advocacy efforts, its contributions to the industry, and his writing.
